Disneyland is a place that holds special memories for everyone that has been there. it’s the closest thing we have to a time machine. how does it work? is it magic? is it pixie dust? i don’t know, but somewhere between the kaleidoscope colors, the man wearing powder blue short shorts with black socks and the screaming group of kids running to be first in line on their favorite ride, it happens. just walk through the gates and somehow you are instantly taken back to your childhood. back to when your pants were tailor made for a flood, your hair was a custom shag thanks to your 4 year old sibling’s masterful barber skills (while you were sleeping), and the only worry you had in the whole world was how to stay awake long enough to see the main street electrical parade and the fireworks.
as a child, judy went to disneyland every year with her family, but she had not gone for the last 5 years. when judy told us that, we knew we had to do something. kim suggested she renew her old family tradition with her soon-to-be husband journee (aka new ohana) by shooting their engagement session at disneyland. judy was thrilled and so were we. we love d-land sessions!
it’s a safe bet that any sunny so-cal day is going to draw a good crowd at d-land. what do you do when you can’t take the crowd out? you put ‘em in. among other celebs we saw at the park that day, rainbow brite was in the house. i gotta get me some of those socks. (we also saw the barkers.)
thank you judy and journee. we really enjoyed our time with you at disneyland. you are such a wonderful couple. we couldn’t be happier for you two and we can’t wait to shoot your awesome wedding in october.
this last shot is a little family tradition of ours. every time i went to disneyland when i was a kid i had to get my fortune read by esmeralda in the penny arcade. i’m not really into fortune telling, but it was just something i always looked forward to. it’s one of those childhood memories that brings me back and makes me smile. kinda like knowing how close we are to disneyland by the landmarks on the drive from san diego to anaheim. i just wish the orange groves were still there.
now rain goes to esmeralda every visit and she sees a lot of the same landmarks i saw, like the windmill by the carlsbad flower fields, camp pendleton (home of the few, the proud, the marines), san onofre, and “the cube” (looks like the allspark from the transformers).:)
